What to Do? What to Do?

Ahh…decisions, decisions!!

A few days ago an opportunity came to me…slapped me in the face, actually, on Facebook.  I read the status…and RE-read the status and tried to IGNORE the status….

…but I. COULD. NOT.

One of my Facebook friends needs to find a home for her two dogs, ages 1 and 3.  She used to live two doors down from me until she separated from her husband.  He still lives there, I think….we don’t see him much.

My daughter and I would see the one dog outside when I would walk her to the bus stop the year our street was closed and the bus couldn’t come down it.  The dog, Lela, would come charging, and I mean CHARGING toward us and we would just be amazed at how beautiful she was.  She would stop right before knocking us over us and “smile”.  Yes, she would smile!!

dogsmileTrust me…it was even cuter than THIS!

Lela is just gorgeous!

Last winter one of the dogs ran off.  This was Nala…she was gone for a week.  One whole week out in the cold weather.  The entire community was looking for Nala.  I cried whenever I would go past their house because they had a shirt hanging on a stick at the end of the driveway hoping that Nala could detect it’s scent and make it home.

She almost made it home.  Unfortunately, behind the houses on the other side of our street, there is a set of railroad tracks and this is what got Nala before making it home to her family that was missing her terribly.  This was Nala….

Someone from the community gave them a new puppy to ease the pain of losing Nala.  The new puppy was named Alan which is Nala spelled backwards.

Now…

…my Facebook friend is in a small house of her own, she has to work because she is no longer married, her one son is 18 and mostly off doing whatever it is 18 year old boys do, and her other son is a few years younger but is still off doing his thing.  She doesn’t have help with the dogs.  She isn’t home most of the time because of work.  And she feels she needs to give up her dogs.

Her ex-husband doesn’t want the dogs now…even though apparently he told everyone how she TOOK HIS DOGS when she left….

So….what did I do??

I contacted her.

I told her I was interested.

I did not tell her I pretty much have lost my mind because she may not consider me for their new home.

But I want these dogs!!  They are gorgeous!  They are lovable!  They are teddy bears!!

They are …..

freakin ST. BERNARDS!!!!!

Doggies!!

Ok…ok…OKAY!!!  I know I have a small house, three kids, and a spouse….but I want these dogs!!  In my defense, I have a big yard!!  (Now with less trees thanks to the last storm!)

She is GIVING them away.

They need LOVE, and you all know I have lots of love to give.

But….

…can I handle them?  Can I even handle ONE??

I think the kids will be damn thrilled to have these doggies.  Of course I will have to be sure they don’t sit on the little ones, and that Little Man doesn’t try to ride one….but still….what would YOU do???

I’m even willing to get some rabbits like THIS ONE:

rabbit..just so they have something to chase besides the kids!

She called me today to set up a time to go over there with the kids so we can see how it all goes.  I’m excited.  I’m nervous.  I’m sad for her….

She was crying on the phone, and of course this made me cry.  Why am I such a softie??  I feel horrible that she feels she has to give up these gorgeous creatures that are part of her family.  I don’t think I could do it.  Can I actually be the ONE to take them from her?  Knowing how she is hurting over this?

I always want to be the one to make people feel better…not worse.  I know in the long run this IS making it better for her, but not initially.  I wish there was something I could do for her…to make it easier.  If we take the dogs, I told her she’s always welcome to come visit, but would that really be helpful??

Ugh!!

So, we go tonight at 7 for the kids to meet the dogs….

I will update you later.  Until then…big furry sloppy kisses to you all!

You're a good friend, but are you a dog person? I thought I was until I had a dog...keep in mind, I never had dogs growing up. I think there's a difference between me and people who did have dogs. Your kids will love it though! I love watching the Crazies with Dog!!!

Oh boy. What a situation you have yourself into now. One of those forks in the road that can drive you crazy. So what are you going to do?

Oh so hard! I personally wouldn't take them, because I know for me, it would not be a good decision. You have to know in your heart if it is right. Just my (not so) HO. Best of luck.

I can't even imagine having to do that. My dogs are like children. I think it is a great thing you are doing. But....is there a way, since you live so close, that you could help her take care of the dogs and still let them live with her? You would still be doing a really great thing and her heart wouldn't hurt so bad. If not...go get the puppies!

I could not take them. But then again, I'm not a dog person. You seem to be so go for it if you have the patience.
